Seven Thousand Oaks Festival of Art and Sustainability presents Touch at a Distance, a day of music, installations and soundwalks in the Heide Sculpture Park that focuses on the importance of listening and its role in developing a more sustainable approach to our presence in the environment and community. Artists from around Australia will inhabit Heide’s beautiful gardens throughout the day, allowing you to wander and experience the event at your own pace. Performances will include Jim Denley on wind instruments, Dale Gorfinkel with vibraphone and home made instruments built from recycled materials and Ross Bolleter playing ruined pianos. Alan Lamb will set up some of his infinite music machines, Matt Chaumont will contribute a large scale installation producing sub-bass frequencies you feel rather than hear and Philip Samartzis will present recordings from his recent trip to Antarctica.
WEDNESDAY MAY 12

ALEX WHITE – Extreme buffer-rub core

Alex White is a sound artist hailing from Sydney, Australia who seeks to create music that teeters on the brink of complete chaos whist retaining barely discernible fragments of form or melody. Alex is also a community arts worker and currently co-directs Serial Space in Sydney.

MATT CHAUMONT – Sub-bass articulations of sine functions, difference tones and space

Matt Chaumont is literally a Master of Time and Space, having received his MA Time and Space from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland. However, before that he began his practice and received a BA of Fine Arts at the University of Western Sydney. He is now located in Melbourne and is studying science at Monash University. He has performed and exhibited his work all over the world, including in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Helsinki, New York, Istanbul, Aarhus, Hamburg, Stockholm, Tallinn, and the Arctic Circle. He likes to experiment and uses low frequencies and the fundamental properties of a varying array of objects and places in his work.

ROSALIND HALL & MARCO CHER-GIBARD – Saxomophone, preparations and electroacoustic time travel

Rosalind Hall is an experimental saxophonist, aiming to create a unique dialogue between the performer and the instrument. Marco Cher-Gibard presently works with samplers and computers to create sample based instruments, which explore ideas of time through repetitive and recursive processes. Together they create a live music that throws into question traditional notions of live performance, instrumentalism and production.

MARTIN KAY – Acousmatic laptop tension, violence and calm

Martin Kay is a Melbourne sound artist who uses field recordings and cross-synthesis techniques to construct hyper-real and abstract immersive soundscapes for live performance, compositions, installations and sound designs.

+ DJ ARSECRACK

————————————————–

WEDNESDAY MAY 19

DALE GORFINKEL & ROBBIE AVENAIM – Vibraphones, foam, motors, tin cans and all sorts of other stuff

Dale Gorfinkel & Robbie Avenaim are specialists in radical approaches to the vibraphone and other percussion.

TOM HALL – Laptop and other electronics

Tom Hall is a media artist based in Brisbane, Australia.

Hall’s eclectic works flourish by utilising a variety of mediums, each that reflect on his varied background and interests. With a strong focus on elements of the ‘everyday’ Hall’s practice involves considered explorations into place, space and time. Drawing inspiration from countless ‘peripheral’ spaces, Hall focuses on using multiple approaches to engage and recontextualise them to the public.

He has contributed and implemented live sound and video performances, installations and exhibitions at various venues and art spaces across Australia and internationally.

IVENS – Vocals, beats and presence

Ivens’ live performances resemble the intense atmosphere of a hardcore gig more than your usual hip-hop throwdown, with Ivens delivering his sharp-focused dystopian lyrical flow to audiences at point-blank range.

THE DANIEL GREEN ENSEMBLE – Video game peripherals, audio visuals and spectacle

Daniel Green is an artist, performer, and occasionally a terrible musician. Your parents would really like him. Apparently he’s got some sort of ensemble.

+ DJ DOWNPAT

————————————————–

WEDNESDAY MAY 26

CANDLESNUFFER – Guitar, ebow, clips and other preparations

The focus of Dave Brown’s solo project candlesnuffer has increasingly centred on the development of composing techniques which meld opposing streams like conventional electro-acoustic methods with noise and rock and also the development of a vocabulary of tiny acoustic sounds enlarged outside their normal context for performance and composition.

ANTHONY MAGEN & FRIENDS – Elmos, noise and whatever else is in the room

Anthon Magen is interested in relationships between people within the landscape including many surfaces and textures from urban master planning to responses to ‘NOISE’ and what it means to people and places and small-scale sonic sculpture. He’s bringing some friends along for the ride.

CLEPTOCLECTICS – Laptop, some synths, various keyboards, a microphone, an MPC1000, and lots of records

Cleptoclectics channels sonic detritus, plays various instruments, and extrapolates via granular synthesis to create dense, idiosyncratic music. Warm textures, a distinctive tonal range, and staggered rhythms develop into a subtle form of reverie.

ANNA CHASE – Strings, keys, skins, vocals and loops

Anna Chase is a Sydney based multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who creates lush, emotive songs; weaving melodies into familiar yet dreamy pop constructions. She uses vocals, guitar and accordion to explore harmonic territories.

+ DJ JIM KNOX

————————————————–

WEDNESDAY JUNE 2

ROBIN FOX – Laptop, audio, video sync pulses, primary color coding signals and projections

Robin Fox is a Melbourne based sound and visual artist currently working with live digital media in improvised, composed and installation settings. He creates audio-visual works for the cathode ray oscilloscope, which have been released on the DVD ‘Backscatter’(synaesthesia records). The DVD has screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Mittwoschule in Berlin, the 8th International New Media Arts Festival in Riga and the TRANSIT festival Switzerland. Live audiovisual performances have taken place across Europe including appearances at the Netmage festival, Bologna, the Wien Modern festival, Vienna, Noise and Glamour Festival, Moscow and the Transacoustic festival, Auckland. This work, in constant development, is currently being realised with a high-powered, audio controlled laser system.

BRUCE RUSSELL – Guitar, tape and noise

Bruce Russell is a New Zealand experimental musician and writer. He is a founding member and guitarist of the noise rock trio The Dead C and the free noise combo A Handful of Dust (with Alastair Galbraith). He has released solo albums featuring guitar and tape manipulation.

JON HUNTER – Guitar, spring reverb and/or laptop

Jon Hunter is an Electronic Artist living in Sydney. He creates sound installations, composes and performs music for modified spring reverberation units, computer and guitar. Jon Hunters’ works sit somewhere between psychedelia and science fiction. Sounding like organic field recordings but synthetically rendered, these tense environments teeter on the edge of collapse whilst the echoes of Hendrix and Haino fly past. He is a part of The Holy Soul, Guarde Compartmente & Delirium Tremens.

FRANCIS PLAGNE – Guitar, vocals and songs

Incorporating field recordings, drones, electronics and improvisations, along with harmony-rich pop songs of the finest order, Francis Plagne has become one of the most unusual, identifiable and exciting musicians to rise from the rich musical landscape of 21st Century Australia.

+ DJ THEMBI SODDELL

THE HORSE BAZAAR
397 LITTLE LONSDALE ST
ENTRY $10/$5 8:30PM
