Avantwhatever presents Dale Gorfinkel & Arek Gulbenkoglu, Anthony Pateras, Carolyn Connors and Adam Sussman live at Sunshine & Grease, 9 Queens Parade Clifton Hill, Melbourne, from 8pm on Saturday July 31. The show is a launch for Dale & Arek’s debut album as a duo, which will be the next in our series of limited edition releases. Entry to the show is $10 and you’ll be able to purchase the cd, packaged in beautiful 100% post consumer recycled wallet and labeling, printed with recycled toner cartridges and hand numbered, on the night before anyone else gets a chance.

Seven Thousand Oaks Festival of Art and Sustainability presents Touch at a Distance, a day of music, installations and soundwalks in the Heide Sculpture Park that focuses on the importance of listening and its role in developing a more sustainable approach to our presence in the environment and community. Artists from around Australia will inhabit Heide’s beautiful gardens throughout the day, allowing you to wander and experience the event at your own pace. Performances will include Jim Denley on wind instruments, Dale Gorfinkel with vibraphone and home made instruments built from recycled materials and Ross Bolleter playing ruined pianos. Alan Lamb will set up some of his infinite music machines, Matt Chaumont will contribute a large scale installation producing sub-bass frequencies you feel rather than hear and Philip Samartzis will present recordings from his recent trip to Antarctica. Meanwhile, Anthony Magen will lead the development of a program of soundwalks that visitors will be able to take around the property.

I’ve just adopted a male two year old black Labrador named Boof. He’s quite a character, very handsome and is fanatical about chasing footballs. I think he’s going to make a perfect addition to the pack.

I’ve just tried my first every homebrew, which I’ve called Rucker’s Folly, and I can definitely confirm that it tastes like beer of some sort. It’s a bit weak and has quite a strong bitter hops finish without much body but it’s alcoholic, drinkable and carbonated so I consider that a victory in itselt. I made it from scratch using only malted grain, hops, yeast and water so I could learn about how it all works and I’m just glad it turned out at all.

I have written a review of last year’s What is Music? festival in Melbourne called ‘A Lot Can Happen In A Minute’. It appears in the current issue of Realtime Arts and you can check it out online here. Although it concentrates on the 50/50 concert staged at the ABC’s Iwaki Auditorium in Southbank along with the nights held at the East Brunswick Club I think it gives a reasonable overview of the festival.
